I have been covering events for almost five years now, and social media makes it so much easier to take notes, create a draft, and post.

In today’s post, I am sharing tips on how you can do the same.

Upon arrival, scan your surroundings for the perfect standalone image. This can be a board with the name of the event, the logo of the event/company hosting the event or a simple display table. Use the image to check in on foursquare and/or Facebook or share it on Instagram to let other attendees know you have arrived. Ask if there is an event hashtag so you can connect with others. This is why I love using hashtags. Hashtags help group conversations about a specific topic, in most cases, an event. I recently shared interesting ways to use Twitter here.

When covering an event with social media, you want to do the following:
– Share the knowledge on Twitter.
– Read what others are saying about the event and engage with them (they could make great testimonials).
– Share images on Twitter, but be careful not to over-share on Instagram.
– Be descriptive with your captions.

Little Things To Keep In Mind
Although tweeting during someone’s presentation might seem as though you are not paying attention, you are sharing the knowledge you learn from the speaker with a wider audience. The best part is you can always go back to your tweets to remember points from the presentation.

Aside from tweeting, I like to share a couple of images on Instagram. Originally, I would share several images on Instagram to help promote a live event. But, if you are an avid Instagram user, you know that multiple posts (more than three) in less than 10-15 minutes from someone makes you think twice about following them. When it comes to multiple posts, think twice about your audience. Who are the people that follow you, and do they care about seeing more than one post?

If you are looking to share multiple images, go with Twitter or Facebook. Both social sites allow you to post multiple photos in one status update. Use this to your advantage. Hint: This is great when sharing a recap in photos. You can do the same on Instagram as well by downloading PicFrame

Whenever you share anything across social sites you want to be descriptive in your caption/posts. By doing so, you make it easier for those that are not at the event to feel as though they are right there with you. Sharing tips or interesting news from the event is a good idea because this makes it easier for you to do a write-up when it is all over, or even share key takeaways with your followers.
