Trying to control frizz in a warm climate can be tough, but there are techniques to help manage the curly hair madness. Natural hair requires more care during the week and finding what works does take time. With trial and error, you can learn about curly hair dos and don’ts.
This post features beauty products from Curls and other curly hair product companies. I received free products Curls to help facilitate my review, however the thoughts expressed below are my own.

Growing up with a mom who didn’t understand how to manage curly hair was somewhat of a nightmare. From brushing my hair to styling it, there were a handful of hairstyles my parents would do.
Most of the time, my hair was pulled back into a braid or parted to the sides with braids. On weekends, my hair was in a bun for ballet class and in a French braid during show season.
Curly Hair vs Straight Hair
There was nothing more painful than having my mother try and brush my curls — most of the time it was dry and each pull created frizz. If you know anything about managing curls, then you know there’s a certain technique to brushing curly hair.
You always want to start brushing from the ends and work your way to the top. My mother did the opposite, and whenever she would try to straighten my locks, I’d end up with burnt marks on my forehead or ears.
It was a mess.

When I turned 12 I no longer wanted my mother to touch my curls. Although I had been going to the salon for years, I wanted to wash my hair at home.
Most of the time that meant I’d leave my curls in knots to avoid combing them out. You can imagine how excited the hairstylists were to see me enter their doors.
For some time, all I did was wash my curls and comb them back. I never knew how to manage my curls. My hair only looked its best whenever I came home from the salon once a week. This is when the curly hair madness began.

I wasn’t aware of heat damage then, but I knew I had to cut my ends often and put treatment on my curls once a month. Those trips to the salon were causing my curls to loosen up.
Although it was easier to straighten my locks, it wasn’t helping my natural curls at all. Apparently, I didn’t learn my lesson.
When I started working at 18, I spent my hard-earned cash at the salon to color, cut, and style my locks often. Throughout the years I learned how to dye and tame my own mane — going to the salon for many years does that to you. That’s how I was able to slowly save money every month.
I was raised to believe that it was easier to manage straight hair vs curly hair. My mother didn’t know how to care for curly hair and I never appreciated the beauty in my natural hair.
After watching hundreds of #curlygirlmethod videos on Instagram and following #curlycurlycurly posts, I learned valuable lessons to bring back my curls.
In my search to improve my curls, I discovered Curls, a brand for people with curly and wavy locks offering various products with quality ingredients. Founded in 2002 by Mahisha Dellinger, Curls is considered a leading brand in the natural hair care industry.
I received a handful of products from their PR team to review, and I was impressed with the results. I’ve tried the Curls Blueberry Bliss Leave-In Conditioner prior to receiving their package and I loved the smell of the product line.
The products I tried left my curls feeling smooth and frizz-free. This was a great way to start my curls journey.
In this video, I shared a tutorial on how I condition my curls to take form. I use the Curls Blueberry Bliss Reparative Leave-In Conditioner to tame the frizz and mold my curls.
If you’re looking for a quick way to treat curly hair madness, then I recommend using the Curls Blueberry Bliss Juice Curl to tackle frizz on Day 2.
Best Hair Products For Curly Hair Kids
Although my mom didn’t know how to manage my curls, I did learn to care for my own. This has also helped me find ways to work with my daughter’s hair.
Her locks are thin, curly, and easily tangles throughout the day. When she wakes up, there’s a knot in the back of her head from all the tossing and turning she did the night before.
Sometimes it’s a struggle to get a brush through. I noticed a change in her curls when I started using the Curly Q’s for Kids Collection.
The Curly Q’s Moist Curls Detangler has made a difference in caring for her curls. Not only are they softer, but they’re easier to detangle.
I use the Curly Q’s Moist Curls Detangler to comb and style her hair in the morning. At night, I just brush out her hairstyle.

Curly Hair Madness: Air Drying Curly Hair
After styling your curls, you might be drawn to reach for a diffuser or put a bag over your hair and apply the dryer. These are great options when you’re pressed for time.
I’ve noticed a change in my curls when I started air drying curly hair instead — both mine and my daughter’s. Her hairstyle lasts longer and my locks have less frizz.
Leaving your curls loose as they dry is the best way to go about this, but there are times you need to tie it up. To avoid creases, there are a handful of options.
For me, I prefer using a microfleece towel when my curls are styled and wet. It helps minimize split ends and frizz.
If you’re looking for the best hair ties for curly hair when dry, then I recommend looking into Goody. I have thick curls and the XL ones work best. These satin ties are also a great fit and help with avoiding creases.
I even use the satin ties on our daughter’s curls to protect it from tangling throughout the day.
