6 Grocery Store Games For Curious Kids

Entertaining kids while you’re shopping at a store can be interesting. Sometimes you might feel overwhelmed with the number of questions your child asks. One way to combat that feeling is to remember your child is growing. They’re curious about the world around them and will continue to ask questions about everything to learn more.

Regardless of how you’re feeling, it’s important to answer your child’s questions. Help your child embrace the world they live in by feeding their curiosity.

Below are 6 ideas for grocery store games you can try on your next trip.

I Spy

I Spy is one of the best games to play with the little ones. It helps them improve their vocabulary and it can be fun to hear them find what you’re describing.

Guess What It Is

It’s not every day you run into certain items you find at the store. One of the ways we enjoy family games with the kids is by getting them involved in the items we need.

The kids enjoy being part of picking out things we need for our home. From everyday snacks to family dinner essentials. This is one of our go-to grocery store games. It’s helped our kids improve their vocabulary as well.

Budget Yourself

Whenever we let the kids get a little something, we tell them they each have a budget to spend. This gets the kids to think about how much money they have available and how to budget themselves for future trips.

With a budget in mind, our kids think twice about how they spend their money all in one place. It’s a great math lesson at the store.

Find The Item

When you’re shopping with the kids, it’s always a good idea to get the little ones involved. The kids love helping us find products on the shelves and are great at noticing them at the store.

Having the kids recognize the products we use on a daily basis is one of our favorite grocery store games. It can be helpful when the kids need to prepare their own snacks, grab a drink, etc.

Need VS Want

Shopping with kids can be interesting. To keep them from fighting or throwing tantrums, we remind them of a simple rule: Let’s grab what we need so we can look at what we want.

The kids love looking at toys or going through the snack aisles. We often tell them to think of whether or not the items they’re looking at are a want or a need. This method will help them improve their decision-making skills when they shop.

What Can You Make With It

Kids often get creative with the items they see at the grocery. We love trying to encourage them to try new foods each time we go. One of the best ways to do this is to think of how items were made. For instance, we pick up peanut butter for our PB and J sandwiches. We remind the kids of where the peanut butter comes from and oftentimes they scream it out.

Another way we like to encourage kids to be active in our trips to the grocery store is by thinking of treats we can make with products. Using the peanut butter example, we discuss how to make our favorite homemade peanut butter cookies.
