Do you enjoy family travel as much as we do? Traveling with kids can be tough when you’re in the car for several hours.

One of my road trip hacks is to carry snacks — lots of it! Bringing snacks during a car ride is always a plus when you have kids. It keeps the kids from arguing and snacks have been proven to work as conversation starters as well.

Whenever my family and I plan a staycation, we think about family road trip ideas that would be fun for everyone. Regardless of where we go, I love planning and packing food for a road trip because it reminds me of the importance of adding the right nutrients.

Best Healthy Road Trip Snacks For Kids

While traveling with kids might not seem like a vacation for some, it’s a blessing for us to be able to take our kids wherever we go — pups included.

When you think about the best road trip snacks for kids, you may automatically assume fruits and vegetables. You’re not wrong for thinking of these options. In fact, fruits make a great on the go snack because they’re full of fiber and vitamins.

Although veggies aren’t always a kid’s first choice, there are snack-friendly bites like edamame that are rich in iron, omega-3 fatty acids, and protein.

7 Protein Rich Foods For Kids

Proteins are the building blocks of your body, and they’re even more crucial for growing kids. Choosing protein rich snacks is a great way to ensure your child gets the necessary nutrients.

Below are 7 of the best protein rich foods for growing kids.

Quinoa

Offering 8 grams of protein for just a cup’s worth of serving, quinoa can be a good protein choice for young children. You can easily swap the rice on your kid’s plate with quinoa. You can also try to add quinoa to your child’s diet by making anything from granola bars to pizza bites.

Peas

Just a cup of peas can offer your little one up to 8 grams of protein. You can add peas to your kid’s pasta, pies, soups, and even one-pot family dishes.

Pulses

Beans and legumes are one of the top vegetarian sources of protein and are perfect for growing kids who haven’t yet acquired the taste of meat. They are versatile and easy to prepare.

Dairy

Dairy products, especially yogurt and cottage cheese, can be a great protein source for your child. Both options can be a great breakfast essential. Simply top them with chopped fruits and/or a drizzle of honey and you’ll end up with a deliciously creamy and sweet breakfast treat.

In fact, yogurt also offers your little one a powerful punch of probiotics, which can help keep their digestive system in line.

Nuts And Seeds

Nuts and seeds, more so pistachios, peanuts, flaxseeds, and sunflower seeds are an excellent source of protein. You could ground and sprinkle some of these into your kid’s everyday meals, or offer a handful of them to your kid as a healthy snack option.

Almonds

Almonds stand out from the bunch because they’re the most balanced protein source for children. Not only do almonds taste delicious raw as well as roasted, but these snacks are also a hit with picky eaters.

Packed with fiber, antioxidants and healthy fats almonds are great for daily consumption.

Meat

Our kids are meat-eaters and it’s a good thing because fish and meat provide a good dose of protein for kids. In addition, the two also offer the body iron and several other crucial minerals.

Quick Travel Snack Ideas For Adults

Most of our family trips include snacks for everyone, even the pups. However, you can’t forget to pack healthy road trip snacks for yourself as well.

I recently discovered a treat the requires little packing and has the right amount of protein. The best part is that it has all the essentials for a smoothie bowl on the go.

It’s a granola protein smoothie bowl that meets your sweet tooth cravings. The Strawberry Almond flavor is my favorite, followed by the Superberries with Chia one.

The Joybol Smoothie Bowl is a great choice for healthy road trip snacks. I will say that the kids have taken on to the different flavors as well.

Each bowl is filled with crunchy goodness and you can add your favorite toppings, such as coconut shavings and nuts to the Joybol smoothie bowl.

I originally purchased Kellogg’s Joybol after seeing it on a fellow blogger’s Instagram account. Shortly after, the company reached out to me when they noticed my comment on my friend’s page.

Although I had already ordered the Strawberry Almond Joybol Smoothie Bowl, I mentioned how I wanted to give it a try before collaborating with the company.

  1. Oh my gosh, I can’t wait to road trip again! I think the snacks are the favorite part of the trip for my kids – I’ll definitely try some of these. Those smoothie bowls look amazing!!!!

  2. I can see these snack ideas as great suggestions. Our kids are all grown up, but I would’ve loved to have this list when they were little!

  3. My oldest son has to be very careful about what he eats in the car as he gets carsick very easily. But my younger son, he would snack the entire 17 hour drive to visit my family if we let him! Maybe I should try some of these smoothie bowls this summer to help keep him full on our trips.
