A messy home with laundry everywhere can be scary to imagine. For some moms, that’s their reality.
Although there are a number of things that cross through someone’s mind when they see a messy home, there’s one thing we can all agree with. That is how a messy home isn’t always sanitary.
With two dogs and three kids, you’re likely to find toys throughout our house. To help control the madness, we purge clothes and toys several times within a year. There’s one season that we prepare to remove bigger items, and that’s during the spring.
Why Clean Before Hurricane Season
Living in South Florida, it’s important to spring clean your home in preparation for the hurricane season.
Whether you decide to tackle the garage or closet space, it’s important to plan around your town’s garbage schedule. This will prevent you from having an overflow of trash or recyclables.
Since we’ve switched to a minimalist lifestyle we’ve been able to decrease the amount of garbage we put out of our house. This has been helpful not only to our environment but also in our health.
Fresh food means less packaging and preservatives — that’s a win-win!
To help spring clean your home in preparation for hurricane season, it’s important to keep these 5 tips in mind.
1. Remove heavy items.
Removing heavy items from the garage is a great place to start. This gives you more room for patio furniture and other items that you’ll need to put away in the upcoming months.
Every town has its bulk pickup day(s) one to two times a month. Find out when your town has theirs and plan accordingly.
2. Refresh your pantry.
Knowing what you have in the pantry will come in handy as you prepare for the hurricane season. It also helps to organize your pantry so that others can find items, such as snacks and cooking essentials.
3. Maintain a clean kitchen.
As you prepare to spring clean your home, it’s important to keep your kitchen tidy. By doing so, you’ll be able to know where everything is at any given moment. It will also keep away any pests from entering the home.
4. Clean and inspect outside areas.
Your gutters might need some cleaning, and it’s important to keep an eye on the drains as well. This will help the water smoothly pass through the drainage system.
5. Organize your emergency items.
From flashlights to a variety of batteries, it’s important to put aside the emergency items as you clean. This comes in handy as you prepare for unforeseen events.
Place your important documents in plastic bags and have them accessible should you need to evacuate.
